Pacific Heights
San Francisco, California
This project involved the complete remodel of a kitchen and its adjoining hallway. The existing kitchen was divided into two rooms with only two small windows for light and air. The new design removed the dividing walls to produce one large space, and replaced the two windows with one large central window. The new window floods the room with light and captures the dramatic view of the San Francisco Bay. The large U-shaped counter allows for multiple cooking and preparation stations, as well as a place to sit and read the newspaper over morning coffee. The underside of an existing stairway was stripped, re-engineered, and then re-clad to minimize its scale; it is now celebrated as a sculptural object within the space. A new bookcase was added in the adjoining hallway to house the owner's large collection of cookbooks.
